Puget Sound Clean Air Agency issues burn ban

In addition to the excessive heat warning issued by the National Weather Service, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has declared a Stage 1 air quality burn ban for King, Kitsap, Pierce and Snohomish counties made effective at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Wildfire smoke from British Columbia is creating pollution levels unhealthy for sensitive groups in many parts of the Puget Sound region. The ban is in effect until further notice.

According to a City of Redmond press release, “Children, pregnant women, older adults and those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions should avoid polluted air and remain indoors, if possible. Take further precaution in maintaining good indoor air quality by closing all doors and windows.”

Residents are not allowed to use charcoal barbecues, fire pits, fire bowls or similar free-standing devices. The use of campfires or bonfires, uncertified wood stoves and agricultural fires is also prohibited. This air quality burn ban is in addition to current fire safety burn bans, and a violation is subject to a $1,000 penalty.
