Redmond Fire Department urges July 4 fireworks safety

The City of Redmond Fire Department would like to remind residents that it is unlawful to sell, possess, use or explode fireworks within the city limits of Redmond (Redmond Municipal Code: 9.26.020). Residents of Fire District 34 (unincorporated King County) are allowed to use fireworks that are approved by the state of Washington (RCW 70.77.136) and purchased through legal fireworks stands. Fireworks are allowed to be discharged in unincorporated King County only on the fourth from 9 a.m. to midnight.

While fireworks are allowed in areas outside of Redmond, the handling and discharge of fireworks require personal responsibility, the the city said in a press release.

“With a little care and planning, you can ensure that your family has a safe and fun Fourth of July. The Redmond Fire Department and the commissioners of Fire District 34 ask you to consider the following safety tips this holiday. Be sure the fireworks you purchase are legal to possess and discharge in your community. It is important to only purchase legal consumer fireworks. Children should not have easy access to fireworks in the home and please use care in selecting the area where you will discharge fireworks,” the city said.

As the summer dry season continues, fireworks pose a significant wildfire threat. The three “B’s” of fireworks safety will help prevent accidental wildfires:

• Be prepared and have water nearby

• Be safe and let only adults light fireworks

• Be responsible and clean up fireworks debris

In addition to the safety tips listed above, the National Council on Fireworks Safety urges families to promote and teach safety by using fireworks responsibly.

Set a good example for children, young adults, friends and family by having a designated shooter that knows each firework, how it performs and how to safely light the firework. Make your backyard celebration a fantastic show for the family and a teaching lesson for everyone present. Let this Fourth of July celebration be the happiest and safest celebration yet,” the city said.
