Redmond High grad receives Super Scholarship from UFCW 21

Netania Boentaram, a recent graduate of Redmond High School, is the recipient of the first Super Scholarship from UFCW 21, the state's largest private sector union with more than 36,000 members in grocery store, retail, health care and other industry jobs.

Netania Boentaram, a recent graduate of Redmond High School, is the recipient of the first Super Scholarship from UFCW 21, the state’s largest private sector union with more than 36,000 members in grocery store, retail, health care and other industry jobs.

The Super Scholarship awards $4,000 a year for four years.

Boentaram works at the Bear Creek Safeway store in Redmond.

In addition to having a 3.97 grade-point average at Redmond High School, she plays piano and viola and volunteers in her community. She and all her all-girl robotics team won first place in the Gladstone Robotics Championships and will now compete in the World Robotics Championship.

When she was in third grade, Boentaram and her family moved to the U.S. from Indonesia. At that time, she spoke Indonesian and her family’s native Javanese but didn’t know a lot of English. Today, she volunteers as an ELL (English Language Learner) tutor, also speaks Spanish and is learning Chinese.

Boentaram will attend the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. this fall. Notre Dame was her first choice because of its five-year program that will allow her to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and an Master of Business Administration degree in Accounting.

According to a press release, UFCW 21 believes in supporting the educational goals of members and their families.

UFCW 21 is working to expand its scholarship to be able to assist more students in achieving an education.
