Redmond hit with rash of mail thefts during holiday season

'Tis the season to steal mail apparently. There were eight reports of mail theft from Dec. 22-26, including seven reports of where mail or contents from a delivered package were stolen from a front porch or street, according to Redmond police spokesman Jim Bove. There were eight reports of mail theft from Dec. 22-26, including seven reports of where mail or contents from a delivered package were stolen from a front porch or street, according to Redmond police spokesman Jim Bove. Six of the theft reports came from Education Hill residents and the other two happened downtown.

One Education Hill resident reported that he found a bunch of mail from Woodinville that had been dropped off in his recycle bin. Police found mail from 17 different people, Bove said.

“It’s important to make sure mail isn’t being left on the doorstep and if so, that someone is watching out for it — either a resident of the household or a neighbor,” Bove said.

Bove advised residents to pay extra postage for tracking purposes and be home when the package arrives to avoid a possible theft.

“Also, locking mailboxes are much safer than one that has a hanging door on it,” he added.
