The David Douglas Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), Redmond, awarded former Redmond mayor Christine Himes its 2016 Women in American History Award.

Himes served on the Redmond City Council prior to becoming the city’s first full-time mayor and first female mayor in 1980. Himes was instrumental in the creation of 19 parks and a trail system by 1983. Industry moved in because of zoning changes and the city became connected through bridges and streets. This laid the groundwork for Microsoft to move its headquarters to Redmond. Helly Hansen and Nintendo opened their U.S. headquarters in Redmond while Himes was mayor.

Himes has served as president of the Redmond Historical Society and is active in preserving Redmond’s history, and lives in Monroe.

NSDAR was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history and support better education for the nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 175,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, NSDAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations.
