Redmond’s fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge, an event where daring people jump into the frigid waters of Lake Sammamish for the benefit of Special Olympics Washington, is once again set for New Year’s Day at Idylwood Beach Park.

The Special Olympics Washington Polar Bear Plunge is organized by local law enforcement agencies and will take place at various locations around the state in January and February.

The Redmond plunge, organized by the Redmond Police Department, is slated for noon on Sunday, Jan. 1. Other fun festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m.

Each Polar Bear Plunge participant must raise at least $50 in donations. If residents don’t want to take the plunge, but still want to raise money, they can sign up as a “chicken coop” participant. In addition, residents can just come to the park and check out the participants, including Redmond police officers, plunging into Lake Sammamish.
