The Redmond Police Department (RPD) detectives are investigating a suspicious incident where a unknown woman entered a fenced back yard of an Overlake home and asked to use the phone because her car broke down.

The woman first knocked on the door of the home in the 4900 block of 166th Circle Northeast at around 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning and did not get answer. She then entered the back yard  through a closed cyclone fence and was confronted by an 83-year-old woman, who was house sitting for her daughter.

The 83-year-old woman did let the stranger use the phone, according to RPD spokesperson Jim Bove, who said the stranger then left.

The 83-year-old woman then called her daughter and told her about the incident. The daughter then called 911 and reported it to the police.

“She knew that it is sometimes how burglaries occur, so she called 911 immediately,” Bove said of the daughter.

Police are not calling the incident a burglary attempt, but Bove did say “it does sound like a very suspicious situation.”

Sometimes, potential burglars first knock on the door to see if someone is home before breaking into the residence, Bove said.

“The best thing to do is to make contact with them through the door, ask who it is and what they want,” Bove said.
