The Redmond Police Department will be watching you Nov. 20 — on the corner of Redmond Way and SR 520.

Officers will be enforcing seatbelt violations from approximately 7 p.m. until midnight Thursday, Nov. 20, as part of the Nighttime Seat Belt Enforcement (NTSBE) grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The enforcement will measure how many people wear seat belts during the day versus during the night.

According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, about the same number of traffic deaths occur during the daytime hours as at night; however, traffic volumes at night are only 12 to 15 percent of what they are during the day, so the fatality rate at night is much larger than the daytime fatality rate. Research shows that seat belt use is about six to eight percentage points lower at night than during the day, so the goal of the Nighttime Seat Belt Enforcement Project is to increase nighttime seat belt use.

Current state law requires every person in a vehicle to wear a seatbelt. Incurred fines for lack of “clicking it” are $124 per person.
