Redmond police recovered two stolen sports utility vehicles early Saturday morning, but the suspect is still on the loose.

An officer made a routine traffic stop of a Honda Passport for expired license tabs at around 2:40 a.m. on Aug. 28 at the intersection of Northeast 30th Street and Bel-Red Road. When the car stopped, the driver jumped out and ran away from the vehicle, which was found to be stolen. The passenger, who remained in the car, was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant and for investigation of possession of stolen property in the first degree, according to Redmond police spokesperson Jim Bove.

Police officers set up a perimeter in the area as they searched for the suspect. During the search, one officer saw a driver of a Chevy Tahoe who matched the description of the suspect at around 3:30 a.m. As the officer began to pull out his gun, the driver sped off down 167th Avenue Northeast, crashed into a wooden fence, then got out of the vehicle and began running north, Bove said. It turns out, that vehicle was also stolen also, according to Bove.

Then, about 7:10 a.m., another officer spotted the suspect running southbound in the 5100 block of West Lake Sammamish. The officer turned his patrol car around, but the suspect was nowhere to be found.

“We were unable to catch the suspect after much tracking, but it is still under investigation,” Bove said. “Both cars were returned to their owners.”
