Redmond Saturday Market’s 38th season begins May 4

While it may be next to impossible to find avocados, oranges, bananas or any other type of warm-climate produce at the Redmond Saturday Market, shoppers can look forward to finding a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables and more come opening day on May 4.

Located at 7730 Leary Way N.E. downtown, the market will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday, rain or shine, through Oct. 26. This will be its 38th season and just as it has in years past, this year’s market will feature products — which range from produce and herbs to jams and sauces to arts and crafts — all grown, made and manufactured in Washington.

“It’s very important to us,” market President Pete Godwin said about keeping things in Washington, adding that their vendors come from all over the state.

He said their customers like to buy local, straight from the grower.

“It’s not all polished and waxed. It’s the ‘real McCoy,'” Godwin said about how fresh the market produce is.

This year, the market will feature about 10 new vendors and their products include jewelry, dog toys, toffee, tea, clothes and artwork.

Godwin, who is also a vendor and has been selling his artwork at the market for 18 years, said they will have about 130 vendors total for the upcoming season and the market has room for about 85 vendors on any given Saturday.

As a longtime vendor, Godwin said his favorite thing about the market is “just being there.” He said he enjoys seeing the new items and artwork. In addition, Godwin said just by talking with his fellow vendors, he has learned a lot of background information about what goes into their final products.

Godwin added that the market is also a good place for vendors to test the waters on new products, start small and receive customer feedback before going “full-blown.”

In addition to a variety of vendors, Godwin said attendees can look forward to a number of market staples including Zucchini Races, Kids Day, master gardeners and Hawaiian Day. There will also be the usual live music every Saturday.

On July 13, the market will feature special guest Ciscoe Morris from “Gardening with Ciscoe.” Godwin said Morris will be at the market in the afternoon and they are very excited to have him.

“If it works out well, we plan on having him back next year,” Godwin said.

In an effort to bring more people to the market, which he said is one of Redmond’s best kept secrets, organizers are upping the ante online and utilizing social media for promotion. Godwin said they will use sites such as Facebook to post real-time updates to encourage people to attend and increase their customer base — which includes out-of-state visitors who happen to be visiting and staying at the nearby Redmond Marriott Town Center.

In addition, the Redmond Saturday Market website has been updated to include vendor photos, biographies and website links.
