Redmond weightlifter, local rowing duo qualify for Summer Olympics

Redmond weightlifter Morghan King will compete in the lightest women's category — 105.6 pounds — at the Summer Olympics in Rio.

Redmond weightlifter Morghan King will compete in the lightest women’s category — 105.6 pounds — at the Summer Olympics in Rio.

The 5-foot-tall lifter has been competing for four years and became involved through CrossFit.

According to her Team USA page, her favorite competition and training lift is the snatch.

Her personal goal is, “Never settle for anything less than my best.”

• Hans Struzyna and Rob Munn and their USA men’s 8 rowing squad qualified for the Summer Olympics in Rio with a victory at the final qualifying regatta (better known as the “Regatta of Death”) in Switzerland on Tuesday.

The duo began competing with the Sammamish Rowing Association in Redmond.

According to the National Rowing Foundation newsletter, “From despair, the men’s 8 delivered delight winning the finals in a great race” against the Polish and the Italian teams. “A perfectly executed race, a superb sprint and an overall performance that rightfully buoys our hopes for the Games.”

The Polish team led the field from the start to the 1,500 with the USA in second 1.61 seconds back. At 1,500 the Polish and Italian teams started their sprints cranking the rating to 40 while the USA matched their speed at 38. At 250, the Italian team at 43 began to close. Matching stroke for stroke at 40, the USA drew even with the Polish team. With 100 meters to go, the USA drove the rating to 43 to best the Polish team by 0.46 seconds and the Italian team by 0.72 seconds. The USA rowed the last 500 a full 2.0 seconds faster than the Polish team to take the win.
