Bothell-based Essentia Water, the official water of the tour, shares the following five tips to help keep you healthily hydrated during outdoor summer festivals:
If you’re headed to an outdoor festival, concert or sporting event this summer, proper hydration is an important part to staying healthy and having an enjoyable time whether you’re a spectator or participant. Here are some summer hydration tips prepared with input from Dr. Ralph E. Holsworth, director of clinical and scientific research for Essentia Water.
1. Plan ahead. Know if the festival you’re attending allows you to bring in your own bottled water and if the bottle needs to be sealed tight or not. You don’t want to have to dump out your favorite brand of bottled water at the entrance. Many festivals also offer cooling stations and free water samples for attendees. Another good idea is to know where the medical tent is should you experience any signs of dehydration such as intense thirst, dizziness, headache, nausea or fatigue.
2. Set an event water intake goal. If you’re going to attend a four-hour event, you’ll need about 11 ounces of water, so be sure to bring at least that much plus some for a friend. If you’ll be doing any physical activity such as climbing stairs, dancing or practicing yoga during the event, be sure to drink a little more water than you would normally consume.
3. Bathroom break. When you’ve finally made your way through the lines for the restrooms and get a chance to go, be sure to do a quick urine check. Yep, don’t be shy. Urine should be a pale yellow. Too clear and you’re probably over hydrating; too dark and you’re likely dehydrated.
4. If you’re going to imbibe alcohol, try to have one eight-ounce glass of water for every alcoholic beverage consumed to reduce dehydration risks.
5. Consider drinking electrolyte-enhanced alkaline water, also known as functional water, at the event or before you head out. Studies have shown consuming electrolyte-enhance alkaline water slows fluid loss, results in more energy during workouts and faster recovery of athletes. High pH water has also been shown to reduce acid in the stomach, helping to balance the digestive tract and reduce “belly bloat” — a plus when donning that summer festival attire, running or practicing yoga.
