On Feb. 10, students from the Stella Schola Middle School Honor Society in Redmond, joined by hundreds of others in Red Square at the University of Washington (UW) to help make the wish of 11-year-old Alex come true to bring world peace through robots.
Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Alex visited the UW’s robotics lab and was surprised at the end of the day with a flash mob dancing to “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas in fulfillment of his “Mission Possible – Robot Protocol” wish.
Alex, who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, was thrilled as he watched students and faculty dressed as robots, Darth Vader and even the UW cheerleaders dancing in robotic fashion. Signs declaring, “Robots Unite!,” “Peace to the World” and “Alex Rocks” waved back and forth to the music and at the end everyone put up the peace sign and shouted, “Peace Alex!”
Stella Schola students and hundreds of other people, learned and practiced the dance moves for the flash mob component of Alex’s wish on YouTube the month prior to the event.
Seventh grader Eliza Ludlam said, “I have never been in a flash mob before and this was really fun and for a good cause, too!”
Brigitte Tennis, Honor Society adviser at Stella Schola, said that its important for students to have opportunities to serve others because it will increase their own self-worth and happiness as well as helping out their community.
KOMO 4 News will air a piece on the event Tuesday night at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. as well as this weekend.
