Teen Center accepting registration for summer camps

Redmond’s Old Fire House (OFH) Teen Center, 16510 NE 79th St., is accepting registration for summer camps and has announced new programs for the fall. Starting in September, the OFH will be open Mondays and Tuesdays, primarily for resource workshops.

Some programs will require fees, others will not.

Fall workshops may include College Application (for 11th/12th grades), Writing College Essays (11/12th grades), Winning Scholarship Strategies (all grade levels), Paying for College (all grade levels), FAFSA (financial aid information for 11th/12th grades) and Making Your Final Choice (choosing a college and understanding financial aid options, for 11th/12th grades).

Job training/resources may include resume writing, Microsoft basic software, interview skills and job listings.

Also planned are workshops in basic self-defense for women, drama, bike maintenance and and musical instrument lessons.

Summer programs at the OFH include:

• Suburban Spirituals — For ages 11-15, happening 1-3 p.m. Mon., Wed., Thurs. and Fri., July 7-18. Learn about the roots of African-American Spirituals, then write, sing and record songs about freedom and the suburban experience.

• KISS Kid-Couture — “Kid-Inspired-Style-on-a-Shoestring!” Ages 11-15, 1-3 p.m. Mon., Wed. Thurs. and Fri. July 28-Aug. 8. Use low-cost and recycled materials to create fashions that express your personal style.

• Black & White Photography Workshop — Ages 12-19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 21-25. Fee: $100 Redmond residents, $120 non-residents. Bringing an SLR 35mm camera to class, learn how to operate the camera, develop film and make prints in a darkroom. Field trips and history of photography will be included.

• For Those About to Rock Music Camp — Ages 13-19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 28-Aug. 8. Fee: $445 Redmond residents, $534 non-residents. Form a rock band, write a song, record a CD and play a live show. Musicians from beginner to advanced levels are welcome. Bring your own instruments/drum sticks and lunch.

• Digital Mixing 101 — Ages 13-19, noon-3 p.m. Tues., Wed., Thurs. Fri. and Mon. Aug. 19-25. Fee: $150 Redmond residents, $180 non-residents.

Learn software programs to digitally mix and produce music. This is a beginner class, but some computer background is helpful.

• Introduction to Parkour: The underground sport — Ages 13-19, 1-3:30 p.m. Mon., Tues., Wed. Aug. 18-20. Fee: $50 Redmond residents, $60 non-residents. Parkour is the use of the human body to overcome physical and mental obstacles. Fundamentals include running, jumping and climbing. Class is with the Pacific Northwest Parkour Association.

• Red Skate: Skate Park Contest — Ages 10 and up, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat. July 26. Fee: $5. Competition with live music, snow cones, demos and prizes, for beginner to advanced levels. Helmets required.

• Skate Crew — Ages 12-18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 21-25. Fee: $175 Redmond residents, $210 non-residents. Skaters of all abilities can improve their skills at a variety of local skate spots. Climb in the van and see what the region has to offer.

• The Power of Rock — Intermediate Level — Ages 12-19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. Aug. 11-15. Fee: $280 Redmond residents, $336 non-residents. Intermediate and advanced players can focus more on performances and question/answer sessions with guest artists and professionals from all areas of the music industry. Participants will record a CD and perform a live show at the end of the camp.

• Video Underground – Young Producers Project. Ages 13-19, 10-a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 14-18. Fee: $280 Redmond residents, $336 non-residents.

Learn media literacy, critical viewing skills, technical training and analysis of cinema techniques. Write, storyboard, direct, shoot and edit audio and visual accounts of personal and community experiences.

• Wilderness Survival and Exploration Camp — Ages 12-19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 21-25. Fee: $135 Redmond residents, $162 non-residents. Expand your knowledge of plants and animals and gain confidence and security when traveling outdoors. Field trips to local parks will be included.

• Digital Photography — Ages 12-19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mon.-Fri. July 14-18. Fee: $100 Redmond residents, $120 non-residents. Bring a digital camera of your choice and learn how to make successful photographs, plus how to print, e-mail and post photos on the Web. No experience necessary.
