A 16-year-old male — a former Lake Washington High School student — is in serious but stable condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being involved in a vehicle-skateboard accident in Redmond on Sunday.

Becky Range, Redmond Police Department public information officer, said she was informed that the teen’s condition had improved on Monday.

Redmond police and fire responded to the collision at 8:15 p.m. at 15590 N.E. 36th St. after a Hyundai Sonata traveling northbound on 156th Avenue Northeast struck the skateboarding teen in the east lane, just north of the vehicle entrance to Overlake Transit Center. The teen was immediately transported to Harborview and is in the intensive care unit.

“The driver had one passenger in the car and both remained on scene. It does not appear the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol, but the investigation is ongoing,” said Range in a press release.

“We are working closely with the school district to make sure fellow students have any assistance they need,” Range said.

Kathryn Reith, Lake Washington School District communications director, said she and her staff have followed their standard process of alerting teachers so they can refer students to counselors and to have counselors available for students to talk to.
