The Mary Gates Endowment awards scholarships to four students from Redmond

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students at the University of Washington announced a total of 112 recipients for its scholarship program today, including four from Redmond.

The applicants were selected to receive the award for their work in research and leadership projects.

The Redmond recipients and their project titles were:

• Benjamin Alan Burrows: “Searching for a Suppressor of scrm-D”

• Kelli Marie Geiger: “Application of Real-Time Oxygen Consumption Method in the Study of Islet Metabolic Behavior”

• Marie Elisabeth LaFond: “Time in Virgil’s ‘Aeneid'”

• Devon Jacob Cole: “Paper-Based Nucleic Acid Diagnostics for the Developing World”

A highly competitive scholarship program, the Mary Gates Endowment for Students promotes undergraduate scholars through financial and community support in research projects and leadership building experiences.

Founded in 1995 by Bill and Melinda Gates in honor of Bill’s mother, Mary Maxwell Gates, the Mary Gates Endowment for Students is one of the largest endowments at the University of Washington. Built on the vision of creating a community of engaged citizens acting as both leaders and scholars, all proceeds of the endowment are dedicated exclusively to the undergraduate scholarship program.
