Ra Salon Spa is sponsoring a waterless car wash from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 1 at 16375 NE 85th St., Redmond. The proceeds from the car wash will go to Puget Soundkeeper Alliance.

The City of Redmond is one of many jurisdictions that have joined together to raise awareness about pollution in Puget Sound. All pollutants going into the city’s storm drains flow directly into local streams, rivers, lakes and ultimately Puget Sound without treatment.

The simple act of washing a car releases two types of pollutants harmful to water creatures, the car wash soap itself and auto-related pollutants such as road grime, break dust, oil and heavy metals including copper and lead.

Currently, the City of Redmond recommends residents take their cars to a commercial car wash where the waste water is sent into the sanitary sewer system and treated before it is released into Puget Sound.

However, waterless car wash products, used extensively in Australia, are now making their way to the United States and will be used for the first time in a Redmond charity car wash this weekend.
