There were no injuries from a townhome fire near the 6400 block of 156th Place Northeast in Redmond Thursday night.

Firefighters from Redmond, Kirkland and Bellevue responded to a 911 call at about 7:40 p.m. after neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames from the adjoining townhome.

Smoke detectors alerted the neighbors to investigate the adjoining residence. Mike Hilley with the Redmond Fire Department (RFD) said the neighbors share a wall with the residence that caught fire and after hearing the smoke detector beeping, they went outside to investigate. The neighbors saw heavy smoke and flames and started banging on the front door to see if anyone was home, he said.

The occupants were not home at the time.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and protect exposures from neighboring homes within about 15 minutes, Hilley said.

According to a City of Redmond press release, the fire’s early containment and prevention from spreading to other homes can be attributed to the working smoke detectors.

“(RFD) wants to remind homeowners that working smoke detectors save lives and in this case, prevented the fire from spreading,” the release states.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears to have started in the kitchen, around the stove. Hilley said they are still not sure if the stove was left on or if there was food left on the stove.

Two families were displaced Thursday night because of the fire. Hilley said in addition to the occupants living in the unit where the fire started, the neighboring occupants were also displaced for the night. Initially, they were not sure how much smoke damage the fire caused in the neighboring unit, but Hilley said it is habitable and the residents have returned home.
