Flag Retirement Ceremony is an important event | Letter

Just a reminder that the VFW Post #2995 in Redmond is having a Flag Retirement Ceremony starting at noon Saturday at 4330 148th Ave. N.E. It is an important and large event. If you have never seen this ceremony, this is a great opportunity to do so.

We had 12 Boy Scouts from Troop 626, and some of their parents, students from Redmond with Power of We and some of their parents, teachers and friends, many of the Seattle Young Marines and volunteers from the VFW Post #2995 helping to fold more than 500 flags. It would not surprise me that when we count the flags Saturday before the ceremony that we have well over 500 flags.

We will also have a guest speaker this year: Ramiro Valderrama, City of Sammamish deputy mayor who is running for state representative in the 45th Legislative District.

There will be opening remarks starting at noon by Jim Weaver, who started the Honor Guard at VFW Post #2995. The Honor Guard and The Men’s Auxiliary are those responsible for organizing this event. The Boy Scouts of Troop 626 will be folding a flag to the reading of the 13 folds, the Seattle Young Marines will be saying the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by placing flags in the flames. This will all be followed by a barbecue.
