AT A GLANCE: Redmond Football

Head Coach: Jeff Chandler, 1st season

Last year: 2-7

2009 turnout numbers: 64

Top returners

Sr. Michael Conforto, QB: Last year’s starting QB will continue to be a serious run/pass threat. With speed in the backfield, Conforto’s arm will be tested this season.

Sr. James Boker, TE/DL: 6-5, 235 pound lineman is legitimate college prospect. One of the biggest blocking threats the Mustangs have.

Sr. Nico Shewey, Jr. Chris Del Toro RB/DB: Pair of speedy running backs will get a majority of the carries this year. Both can run great routes and keep the opposition off-balance.

Sr. Cody Klepinger, Jr. Nikolai LaCour, WR/DB: Pair of quick, sure-handed receivers that Conforto will be looking to hit downfield for big gains.

Sr. Will Yoo, OL/LB: Senior leader of the offensive line has great attitude and work ethic.

Did you know?

Coach Chandler’s most memorable football game was against Inglemoor in 2001, when his Wolves were down 21-0 five minutes into the first quarter and then scored 45 unanswered points to win 45-21 in a torrential rainstorm. He said on the victory: “What made it memorable is that it was the players that provided the leadership. The turnaround came from the players and their belief in each other.”

Quotable:

“If I have good coaches and word gets out that coaching is good, that gets and keeps more kids out. We are building a program… we want to do well, but it’s my job to keep an eye on the big picture, building strength in the foundation and continue to get better. Our goals are to get better every day, and on Friday nights compete to the best of our ability. The scoreboard will take care of itself.” – Mustangs’ head coach Jeff Chandler

Big game:

Friday, Oct. 1 vs. Skyline: Redmond hosts the defending state champion Spartans in a Crest division showdown. Although they lost BYU-bound Jake Heaps, Skyline still has one of the best receivers in the league in Kasen Williams, who is considering the University of Washington and UCLA. The ability to stay competitive in this contest against an elite program will tell a lot about how far the program has come since last year.
