BOYS’ SOCCER

THE OVERLAKE SCHOOL

• Head Coach: Bob Bristol, 16th season

• Last Year: 13-0-1, Emerald City League champions; 20-1-1 overall, 1A state runner-ups

• 2010 turnout numbers: 50

KEY RETURNERS

• Jr. Jesse Klug (F): Top scorer in the league last season, set season scoring record for Overlake with 31 goals. Will be counted on this season after most of the offense graduated.

• Srs. Marcus Munoz, Grant Munoz (D): Twins have returned stronger and quicker, will anchor the defense.

• Jr. Joe Dolack (MF): Third-year starter and rookie of the year as freshman, will move from defender to midfield.

• Jr. Rohan Kumar (MF): Joined team last year, very quick, dangerous dribbler and goal-scoring threat on the outside.

TOP NEWCOMERS

• So. Mac Hewitt (D): Called up late last year, has good field sense and will be a good fit in the backfield.

• Jr. J.J. Cardenas (GK, F): Very quick and technically solid, but unfortunate injury will keep him sidelined for a while. Owls need him back healthy with lack of experience in goal.

• Jr. Jarrett Taylor (MF): Very “clever” player with good field vision, will play on the wing.

BIG GAME

• Saturday, Oct. 19 at Bellevue Christian: Always a tough Emerald City League matchup, the Vikings return a powerhouse group and will be very strong. They will be battling the Owls for the league title so this game down the stretch is of paramount importance.

THE BEAR CREEK SCHOOL

• Head Coach: Chad Pohlman, 8th season

• Last Year: 10-1-1, Sea-Tac 2B champions; 14-4-2, 2B state runner-ups

• 2010 turnout numbers: 36

KEY RETURNERS

• Sr. Jamie Clough (GK): Recorded six shutouts last season and will continue to put a lock on the net this year.

BIG GAME

• Thursday, Oct. 21, vs. Tacoma Baptist: The two-time defending champion Crusaders knocked off the Grizzlies in the 2B title match last season. Once again the Crusaders will be the team to beat.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

• Last Year: 6-3-1 in 4A Kingco, 9-6-1 overall

• 2010 turnout numbers: 72

BIG GAME

• Thursday, Oct. 26 vs. Skyline: The Spartans always return a tough squad (4A state champions in 2008, 3rd in 2009). This final league game of the season will be a good litmus test for the Mustangs as they look to make a run in the postseason.

• Soph. Quinn Phillips (MF): All league second-team last year, great one-on-one ball winner with speed.

TOP NEWCOMERS

• Fr. Katie Hill (MF/F): Great field presence, works hard on and off the field. Good ball distribution skills and runs well.

• Fr. Meredith Adams (D/MF): Speedy wing player who can out-hustle opponents up and down the field.

BIG GAME

• Tuesday, Oct. 19 vs. Seattle Academy: The Cardinals handed the Owls a stinging loss in the title game last year. Although they graduated the state’s leading scorer in Sierra Keeler, their deep program has more than enough talent for them to remain the team to beat.

• Frs. Caroline Bridgwater (MF/F), Brittany DiGenova (D): A pair of strong Crossfire Premier players making the transition to high school soccer. Will be impact players at their positions in 2010 and upcoming seasons.

BIG GAME

• Wednesday, Oct. 13 and Monday, Nov. 1 vs. Evergreen Lutheran: A pair of late-season matchups against the always competitive Eagles will be vital as teams jockey for playoff seeding position in a tough Sea-Tac 2B league this year. Also, look out for Seattle Lutheran and boys’ 2B champion Tacoma Baptist, which is fielding a girls’ team for the first time.
