In the 30th King’s Invitational on April 18 in Shoreline, Bear Creek’s track-and-field boys finished fifth out of 21 teams thanks to dual victories by both Jonny Magee and Ben Lee.

Magee was named field events athlete of the meet, tying his long jump personal record (PR) with a mark of 21-10 and jumping 46-04.25 in the triple jump to set a King’s Invitational record and place him at the top of Washington state marks this season (inclusive of all divisions); he also placed sixth in the 200-meter run (24.06).

Lee topped the podium in both of his hurdle races, setting a PR and school record in the 300-meter hurdles (42.48). He won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.17.

Luke Poling finished in the top half of the 800-meter run (2:11.99), just missing out on setting a PR, while Sean Gallagher fought hard and finished strong in his races (1,600- and 3,200-meter runs). Richard Zhang PRd in both the 100-meter (12.55) and 200-meter (26.53) runs and Alyson Wong PRd in 100-meter run (14.76).

Magee has earned a scholarship to attend the University of Idaho to compete on the team’s jump and relay squads.

Magee was a three-year varsity starter on the Bear Creek basketball team and was selected first-team all-league last year.

On the track, he has qualified for the Washington 2B state track and field championships each year. After qualifying in the long and high jump his freshman year, Magee returned his sophomore year to place third in the long jump, third in the triple jump and seventh in the high jump. As a junior, he dominated the 2B state meet as the triple-jump champion, member of the champion 4×100-meter relay, runner-up in the high jump and fourth in the long jump. Magee has been awarded the WIAA State Athlete of the Week and was a member of the 2014 Track 2B WIAA Academic State Champion Team.

Tim Cawley, director of track and field and cross country at the University of Idaho, said: “Jonny is a great addition to the team. He has a natural feel for the triple jump that not many athletes have at his age. We are excited to see him grow as a student-athlete here at the University of Idaho and with his easy-going sense of humor; he will fit in just fine.”
