Firminger wins two tri-district golds; Bear Creek sends 16 athletes to state meet

Led by Josh Firminger's two golden runs, The Bear Creek School claimed wins in six individual events and one relay at last week's Class 2B Tri-District Championship track and field meet. The two-day meet started last Thursday and concluded last Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.

The two-day meet started last Wednesday and concluded last Saturday at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.

Firminger won the 200 meters in 23.94 seconds and claimed the 400 gold medal in 51.77.

The top three finishers at the district meet advance to the two-day Class 2B State Championships, which start Friday and conclude Saturday, at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. In all, the Grizzlies will send a combined 16 boys and girls to the state meet.

“All of the athletes going over have a great chance to advance to the finals in their events,” said Bear Creek track and field coach Scott Wright.

Firminger, along with Nigel Saw, Lucas Fernandez, and Kyle Blankenbeckler, will compete in the 400 relay at state after they finished third at the district meet with a time of 45.88. Mark Phillips, another member of the 400 relay team, will also make the trip to state.

Grizzly teammates Jake Mathews and Ben Bruniki went 1-2 in the pole vault at the district meet with Mathews clearing 10 feet, 6 inches and Bruniki getting over at 10-0.

On the girls’ side, Bear Creek dominated the field events, taking home gold medals in the high jump, javelin and discus.

Sophomore Maddie Magee cleared 5-5 to claim an easy win in the high jump, beating Tacoma Baptist’s Adriana Burns, who cleared 4-8. Magee placed second at the state meet last spring as a freshman. She has cleared a personal-best 5-8 earlier this year, which is tied for the best mark in the state, regardless of classification.

Bear Creek senior Emily Kadeg won the javelin with a toss of 111-6. Kadeg’s personal best is 121-1, which ranks second in the state among 2B schools.

Senior thrower Megan Cheever claimed a gold and bronze medal with a win in the discus (95-11) and a third-place finish in the shot put (30-9).

“Megan Cheever has a great chance of finishing very high in the discus,” Wright said.

Bear Creek junior Kira Geiger was second in the pole vault with a mark of 8-0.

The Grizzly team of Elizabeth Fernandez, Morgan Rial, Halle Coleman and Danielle Isbell won 800 relay with a time of 1:50.66 and the team of Rial, Coleman, Isbell and Joy Jacobson ran third in the 400 relay.
