Grizzlies beat Mustangs in all-Redmond volleyball showdown | Prep Report

The Bear Creek School volleyball team, coming off a grueling road trip to Yakima for the Yakima Volleyball Festival last weekend, came to Redmond High on Tuesday night to take on the 4A Mustangs and came away with a 3-0 sweep on game scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-15.

For the Grizzlies, Makena Schoene and Nikki Peterson led the offense with 10 kills apiece, followed by Bethan Meyer with five kills and three aces.

Michelle Brown recorded 26 assists and a team-high 17 digs, with libero Morgan Cadigan adding 13 digs.

For Redmond, all-league libero Justice Magraw hit the ground for a game-high 21 digs along with five kills, with Lauren Bogard and Heather Smith notching four kills each.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 5-1-1 overall and Redmond dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

 

Overlake boys nip Bear Creek in tennis

In an all-Redmond nonleague battle on the tennis court, the Overlake boys’ won two of three doubles matches to sneak by the Bear Creek Grizzlies 3-2.

In singles action, 2009 state champion Jake Imam of Bear Creek beat Trym Torvund 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, with Overlake’s Grant Gibson winning his match via a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.

In doubles, Tristan Hyon and Adam Worley of Bear Creek won a thriller against Bob Gardner and Ethan Hayden 3-6, 7-6, 10-6 (tiebreaker); and the Owls teams of Preston Ballou and Andrew Gavrila (6-3, 7-6) and Mac Hewitt and Pavin Browne (6-2, 6-2) each won their matches in straight sets.

 

Bear Creek boys start season with draw

Playing a tough Tacoma Baptist team, the Grizzly’ boys soccer squad battled to a 3-3 draw with the Crusaders on Tuesday night in Tacoma.

Bear Creek got on the board early with goals from Mark Phillips (assisted by Jesse Leuenberger) and Sajan Nauriyal in the 7th and 9th minutes, but the Crusaders fired back with three goals in the 12th, 17th and 45th minutes to take the lead.

Mark Phillips booted in the equalizer with 20 minutes to go in the game off a feed by Garrett Benson, with neither team able to score the game-winner.

 

Overlake girls start off season with wins

The Owl girls’ soccer team started off their 2011 campaign with a pair of victories over the weekend, beating Northwest School in their 1A Emerald City League opener 5-2 on Friday and defeating Meridian 3-2 on Saturday.

In the Northwest School win, Katie Hill scored in the 2nd minute off a Tess Edenholm assist and Edenholm later scored in the 13th minute off a feed from from Jenay Brown.

After Northwest tied the game 2-2 heading into halftime, the Owls dominated the back end of the game.

Forward Adrianna Gildner had an assist and scored twice, and Emily Walter also headed in a corner kick as the Owls put the game away.

On Saturday, Edenholm added two more goals and freshman Catherine Cunningham recorded a score and an assist in the win.

The Owls are 1-0-0 in league play and 2-0-0 overall.

 

Overlake boys beat by Bellevue Christian

The Overlake boys’ golf team fell in a close 1A Emerald City League golf match to Bellevue Christian on Wednesday afternoon, 156-161, at Twin Rivers Golf Course.

Viking standout Bo Foster fired a 1-over 35 for medalist honors, with Overlake taking the next three spots with Daniel Lee’s 37 and Noah Mayer and David Anderson firing 38s.

 

Redmond boys’ golf downed by a stroke

In one of the closest and lowest-scoring golf matches ever in 4A Kingco league play, the Redmond Mustangs were clipped by the Woodinville on the Falcons’ home course, Echo Falls, 187-188 on Tuesday.

Oliver Rudnicki fired an even-par 36 to share medalist honors with Woodinville’s John Mudrovich, with the Mustangs’ top five – Lyle Rudnicki (37), Jimbo Curtin (38), Jackson Safon (38) and Daniel Bies (39) all posting sub-40 scores.

With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 2-2 on the season.
