Grizzlies’ volleyball grinds out fourth-place finish at state

The Bear Creek School volleyball team won three games at the 2B state tournament last weekend at the Yakima Sun Dome to place 4th, the program’s highest finish in school history.

Bear Creek opened up the tournament with a three-game sweep of Riverside Christian, 25-17, 25-22, 25-10, before getting swept themselves for the first time this year by eventual 2B state champion Reardon, 25-18, 25-20, 25-16.

In the consolation semifinal against Dayton, with the winner being guaranteed a trophy, the Grizzlies lost their fourth straight game 21-25 to fall into a 1-0 hole in the match.

With their backs to the wall, the Grizzlies dug deep and won the next three, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-12 to advance to the 4th-7th place trophy game against Brewster.

In the trophy match, Bear Creek survived a close first game and were on cruise control the rest of the match, winning 3-0 on game scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-13.

In the win against Brewster, Domonique DuBois led the team with 12 kills, followed by Makena Schoene and Bethan Meyer with seven.

Nikki Peterson led in the Grizzlies in three different categories, collecting four aces, 12 digs and four blocks.

In the four tournament games, DuBois slammed a team-high 41 kills, Peterson saved 53 points with digs, and league MVP setter Michele Brown recorded 130 assists.

“We had a great season, the girls worked hard every day to improve and each player played an important role in our success,” said head coach Sherrie Brown. “The girls set their goals high and worked hard to obtain them. (Seniors) Maddie and Dominique will be missed but have helped set a solid foundation for Bear Creek Volleyball for the years to come.”

The Grizzlies ended the year with a record of 19-3, including a perfect 12-0 mark in Sea-Tac 2B league play.
