Gymnast Okamura reaches podium at Nationals

Alexa Okamura, a sophomore at Redmond High School, shined at the Level 9 Western Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa last Saturday, placing fifth in the all-around competition.

Alexa Okamura, a sophomore at Redmond High School, shined at the Level 9 Western Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa last Saturday, placing fifth in the all-around competition.

Okamura scored 9.025 on the vault, 9.225 on the bars, 9.4 on beam and 9.125 on the floor for an all-around score of 36.775.

Her individual performances on the bars (sixth) and beam (fifth) also earned her podium honors.

Okamura trains at Gymnastics East in Bellevue and is coached by Kim Thomson, Kim Rodgers, Tami Carney, Remus Dragon and Tamara Diles.

The Western Nationals, the season-ending culmination event for youth gymnastics, featured nearly 500 gymnasts competing in various age groups.
