The University of Texas at Dallas men’s soccer team scored on a corner kick in the 64th minute and added an insurance goal in the closing seconds to take a 2-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer — featuring Redmond sophomore defender Colin Malaska — last Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament.

The Sagehens, who were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1980, end their season at 14-6-2.

The teams were in a close battle throughout on a cold (40 degrees) and rainy evening, as host UT Dallas held an 8-5 edge in shots at the half, although only one needed to be saved by senior goalie Nigel Brady. Sophomore Matthew Marvin had two of his shots saved by Joseph Weber in the first 60 minutes.

The scoreless deadlock was finally broken at the 63:18 mark as Danny Meyer took a corner kick that got through a crowd of players, hit off the far post, and bounced over the line to make the score 1-0.

With just under 12 minutes to go, the Sagehens came an inch from the equalizer on a corner kick of their own, as freshman Jake Merkle put a header right on net, but Weber just tipped the ball at full extension to keep the shutout going.

The Sagehens continued to try to find the equalizer, as Drew Lind missed wide and Matthew Marvin missed high in the final 10 minutes. With everyone pushing forward, UT Dallas sealed the game on a counter, as Meyer crossed the ball to Julian Torres, who finished with 24 seconds left to make the final score 2-0.
