Mustang track and field squad sends eight to state

Redmond senior Sarah Lord continued her distance-running dominance at last weekend’s 2/4 4A Bi-District track and field meet at Southwest Complex in West Seattle, earning a coveted trip to the state meet this weekend.

Fellow distance runners Mack Young and Aiden Irish topped the competition and five other Mustangs shined at the district meet to earn a spot at the state competition this weekend at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High.

Lord won the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5 minutes and 2.87 seconds, and then won the grueling 3,200 in 10:51.61, 22 seconds better than teammate Jillian Jaccard, who also qualified for state in both the 1,600 and 3,200.

Ally Mueller won the javelin with a toss of 121 feet, 6 inches, and Amy Sturdivant finished second in the pole vault and qualified for state by clearing 10 feet.

On the boys’ side, senior Cole Hardwick became the only Mustang to qualify for a sprint event with a 22.37 time in the 200, while Young turned up the heat down the stretch of the 1,600 to outlast Bothell standout Trey Parry. Young won the race in 4:17.86 and Parry was second in 4:19.44.

Irish claimed the 3,200 district title with a time of 9:33.89, less than three seconds faster than Inglemoor’s Billy Wilkens.

Mustang senior Jimmy Brookman’s season-best javelin toss of 181 feet, 8 inches was good enough for third and a shot at state.

Also, Redmond’s 400 relay team of Felipe Colmenares, Scott Daley, Cole Hardwick and Cameron Sandquist made the state cut by one-tenth of a second over Garfield, but the Mustangs were disqualified due to a bad baton handoff.

The 4A State Track and Field Championships, also known as Star Track, will start Thursday afternoon and run through Saturday evening.
