Mustangs blank Garfield on the gridiron

The Redmond High football team earned its second win of the season with a 27-0 shutout of struggling Garfield in a 4A Kingco Crest Division contest Thrusday night at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Garfield (0-3, 2-5) had been outscored 147-7 through their first three games of league play and couldn’t get going against the Mustangs, who snapped a two-game skid. The Mustangs improved to 2-2 in league play and 2-5 overall.

Nico Shewey ran in the game’s first score from 25 yards out and then the Mustangs capitalized on a Bulldogs’ error with a 28-yard fumble return for a touchdown to go up 12-0 in the first quarter.

Michael Conforto scored on an eight-yard touchdown run in third quarter and kicker Andrew Rohrbach showed off his strong and accurate foot with field goals of 34, 37 and 40 yards.

Redmond has a stiff test next Friday, when the Mustangs play host to top-ranked Skyline (3-0, 5-1). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Grizzlies blast Seattle Lutheran

The Bear Creek volleyball team won a key opening game 25-23 en route to a 3-0 sweep of Seattle Lutheran in a Sea-Tac 2B League matchup Thursday night.

The Saints never recovered from their narrow loss in the opening game and lost the next two games 25-11 and 25-21 to fall to 0-7 in league play and 0-10 overall. Bear Creek improved to (5-3, 7-3).

Maddi Easley and Bethan Meyer each recorded six kills, setter Michele Brown chipped in with 23 assists and four service aces for the Grizzlies.

Defense was at a premium for Emily Kadeg and Dominique DuBois, who combined for 28 point-saving digs in the match.

Overlake’s big second half downs Seattle Academy

Seattle Academy held Overlake’s potent offense in check in the first half, but the Owls went on a scoring spree in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals in a 1A Emerald City League soccer showdown Thursday night.

Jesse Klug got things going for the Owls with a goal in the 27th minute on an assist from Henk Wolda.

Early in the second half, Cardinal sophomore Connor Freeman scored an unassisted goal to even things up at 1-1, but the Owls responded in a big way with Devon Schmidt (55th minute), Klug (60th) and Sky Tweedie-Yates (77th) all scoring.

Andrew Cunningham followed up his hat trick performance against Northwest on Tuesday by assisting all three of the Owls’ second-half scores against the Cardinals.

The win gave Overlake a commanding lead at 10-0-0 in league play and improved its overall record to 11-0-0, while Seattle Academy dropped to 3-3-3, 3-4-3.

Lady Owls win again

Playing at home, the Overlake girls’ soccer squad had no problems dispatching the Ravens of Forest Ridge 6-1 in a 1A Emerald City League contest on Wednesday night.

Freshman Tess Edenholm got the Owls started with a goal in the fifth minute off of a Allison Risa pass. Risa collected another assist, feeding Susannah Kelly three minutes later. Edenholm adding an unassisted goal at the nine-minute mark to put the Owls up 3-0 early.

With Forest Ridge’s only score coming on an Overlake own goal, Emily Kelly added two of her own and Maya Marder scored early in the second half to complete the victory.

The Overlake girls’ squad, since losing 3-0 to Seattle Academy on Friday, Oct. 2, have outscored their opponents 17-2 in four straight wins, improving its record to 9-1-0 in league play, 11-1-0 overall.

Mustangs tame Cougars

The Redmond High girls’ soccer team scored a season-high five goals, by five different players, during a 5-1 4A Kingco win against the Bothell Cougars Thursday night at Redmond High School.

Annika Hayman started the scoring early with a goal off of a Katie Woodman pass in the first minute. Erin Handschin, Jordan Scheibe, Rachel Herron and Morgan Alfrejd all scored. Hayman and Herron also contributed with one assist.

The win put the Mustangs above .500 in the league standings at 4-3-1, 6-4-1 overall.

Harper qualifies for state in Redmond loss

Sammamish beat Redmond 115-67 at a 4A Kingco swim meet on Thursday night at Redmond Pool, but the bright spot was Redmond junior Heather Harper winning and qualifying for state in the 100 fly event with a lightning-fast time of one minute, 1.53 seconds.

In addition to Harper, Mustang Kaley French won the grueling 500 freestyle in 6:21.95, and Harper once again won the 100 breast event in 1:09.34. Brianna Steckler continued her great diving season with another win, netting 115.55 points.
