Mustangs hold off surging Newport | Prep basketball roundup

Playing in a big 4A Kingco game Tuesday night at home, the Mustangs finished with a flourish, scoring 30 fourth-quarter points, to hold off the surging Knights, 72-63. Redmond struggled in the first half and was trailing 27-22, before overtaking Newport in the third and answering the Knights shot-for-shot in the shootout fourth-quarter that saw a total of 55 points put on the board.

For the Mustangs, six players scored six points or more, led by Jason Harrington’s game-high 21 and Kyle Sawtell’s 20.

The win moved improved Redmond to 8-4 (13-5) overall, and the team plays again tonight against struggling Inglemoor (1-12 in league play) at home, tipoff at 8 p.m.

 

Slow start for Lady Stangs leads to loss

A slow start that saw Redmond trail 22-13 at the half eventually led to a 49-39 4A Kingco loss for the Mustang girls against Newport on Tuesday night.

Kelsey Dunn led the team with 10, with Lauren Bogard and Maddie Erlandson adding seven each.

The loss dropped the Lady Mustangs to 2-10 in conference play and 6-12 overall.

 

Overlake boys falter late to Cedar Park

The Owl boys held a 26-22 lead at halftime against visiting Cedar Park Christian, but the Eagles had a fourth-quarter surge to pull ahead in the closing minutes and win 59-53 in a 1A Emerald City League matchup.

For Overlake, Cameron Lui had a season-high 20 and Dean Poplawski added 15 as the team dropped to 5-6 in league and 9-10 overall.

The Owls have their final regular season game tonight at home, Senior Night, against Bellevue Christian at 7:30 p.m.

 

Bear Creek boys, girls thump Rainier Christian

The Bear Creek boys team made it a true team effort on Tuesday night at 11 different players scored in a 59-22 win over Rainier Christian in a Sea-Tac 2B league matchup.

Collin Feight led the Grizzlies with 14, followed by Erik Domas and Luke Blankenbeckler with eight.

With the win the team improved to 10-0 in league play and 16-2 overall.

On the girls’ side, the team also won in a rout, 49-20 over Rainier Christian, holding the Mustangs to just two points in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Nikki Peterson led with a game-high 10, with a total of seven other Grizzlies scoring four points or more in the game.

The win improved the Grizzlies to 9-1 in league and 12-5 overall.
