Newport derails Redmond in league opener | Prep Report

Newport derailed the Redmond baseball team, 4-1, in a 4A Kingco opener Tuesday night. Led by staff ace Jeffrey Gonzales, the Knights played error-free defense and shut down the Mustangs, allowing only one run — a Michael Conforto home run in the fourth — and five hits total while Gonzales struck out eight.

Newport derailed the Redmond baseball team, 4-1, in a 4A Kingco opener Tuesday night.

Newport reliever Jared Fisher worked a scoreless seventh inning for his first save of the season.

With the loss, the Mustangs dropped to 0-1 in league play and 2-2 overall.

OWLS COME UP SHORT IN DOUBLEHEADER

The Overlake School baseball team played a double header against Emerald City League rival Cedar Park Christian on Tuesday night at Cedar Park and came up just short in both, losing 7-6 and then 4-3 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Owls were down 4-1 before exploding for five runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI extra-base hit by John Stolarczuk.

The Eagles, however, scratched across a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead that held up through the seventh.

Stolarczuk went 2-for-4 in the game with a double, triple and three RBIs, while Aaron DiGenova and Jackson Umberger both notched two hits.

In the second game, Josh Bensussen and Mitchell Stolarczuk both had 2-for-3 performances at the plate, but it wasn’t enough as Cedar Park’s Andy Littlefield laced a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to change the game from a 3-2 Overlake lead to a 4-3 Cedar Park advantage, with the Eagles pitching a scoreless seventh to seal the deal.

With the losses, the Owls dropped to 1-6 overall and are 0-3 against Cedar Park this season.

OVERLAKE GIRLS SWEEP PUMAS

The Overlake School girls’ tennis team took care of University Prep, 5-0, on the Pumas’ home courts on Tuesday afternoon.

In the singles matches, Owl standout Lana Robins swept Emily Anderson 6-0, 6-0 and her younger sister Julia defeated Amy Glazier-Togerson 6-1, 6-3.

The No. 1 doubles squad of sisters Stephanie and Caroline Roush dominated Priyanka Jain and Jen Reynolds 6-1, 6-1, Catherine Jessen and Nikki Reynolds survived two close sets to win 7-5, 7-6, and Elaine Kissel and Emily Walter came from behind after losing the first set 3-6 to win 7-5 and 1-0 in a tiebreaker game.

REDMOND LACROSSE SHUTS OUT LIBERTY

Led by Tanner Champagne’s three goals, Redmond lacrosse shut out Liberty 13-0 in a boys’ Division II contest on Tuesday afternoon at Marymoor Park. Joseph Mernaugh added two goals, three assists as a total of seven Redmond players scored in the rout.

With the win, the Mustangs are now 2-1-0 on the season.

MUSTANGS FALL TO O’DEA IN EXTRA-INNING THRILLER

The Redmond High baseball team fell to defending Class 3A state champion O’Dea, 10-9, in a nonleague contest last Thursday night at Hartman Park.

Redmond fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but the dynamic duo of Dylan Davis and Michael Conforto hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game.

The Irish’s potent bats continued to add to the lead, which was extended to 9-4 by the fifth inning. But Redmond junior Jake Levin answered by launching an 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a three-run home run, narrowing the gap to 9-7.

In the bottom of the seventh with the Mustangs down, 9-7, another junior, Colin McBride, came up big with a clutch two-run shot to send the game into extra innings. The Irish scored a run in the top of the eighth and shut down the Mustangs, 1-2-3, in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

McBride led the offense with two home runs and three RBIs for the Mustangs, who notched five of their nine hits via the long ball.

The team fell to 2-1 in nonleague play, with their league schedule starting up tonight against Newport at Newport High School.

REDMOND FASTPITCH CRUSHES EDMONDS-WOODWAY

Starting pitcher Emily Graves was masterful on the mound and the Redmond High bats came alive in a 13-1 nonleague fastpitch rout over Edmonds/Woodway last Thursday night at Redmond High School.

Graves allowed one hit and one run in four innings of work while striking out two. Christine Ho worked two scoreless innings and struck out three.

Jenny Eisenmann and Kelly Walls led the offense, going 4-for-4, while Stephanie Gero went 3-for-3 including a rare triple.

The win improved the Mustangs to 2-0 on the season, with their next game coming against Port Angeles this Saturday at the University of Washington’s Husky Softball Stadium. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

OVERLAKE BOYS WIN GOLF JAMBOREE

The Overlake School team defeated a field of four schools on Monday afternoon, winning the boys’ golf jamboree at the Golf Club at Redmond Ridge with a total of 169 strokes.

Bear Creek finished second with a score of 177, followed by Life Christian of Tacoma with 184 and Friday Harbor with 189.

Each team fielded six players and the lowest four scores were counted.

Overlake junior Reid Fredrickson won the individual medalist honors by shooting a four-over 39.

OWLS TENNIS SWEEPS CARDINALS

Overlake’s strong tennis program routed the Seattle Academy Cardinals in straight sets on Monday afternoon at the Overlake School, winning 5-0.

In singles, No. 1 Trym Torvund handled Adam Epstein with ease, 6-1, 6-3, and No. 2 Grant Munoz beat Gibson Collins 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Marcus Munoz and Trevor Partington, the team’s lone senior, beat Owen Harrang and Connor Freeman 6-2, 6-3 and juniors Nishant Velagapudi and Henk Wolda nearly shut out Caleb Corr and Sam Epstein 6-0, 6-1.

With the win, Overlake improved to 2-0 on the season.

REDMOND LACROSSE ROUTS PORT ANGELES

The Mustangs scored early and often against the Port Angeles Mountaineers last Saturday at Redmond High School in a 9-1 victory.

Joe Mernaugh tallied the game’s first goal early in the first period, and less than a minute later, K.C. Downey followed with another unassisted goal of his own, while Nicolo Shewey was stellar in goal and did not allow a score.

Downey led the scoring with two goals and two assists, followed by Mernaugh with two goals and one assist, and eight ground balls. Quinn Aebi and Tanner Champagne also contributed two goals.
