Jesse Klug scored three first-half goals as the Owls thrashed Seaton Catholic of Vancouver, Wash., 9-0, in their state opener at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.

Gavin Mackinlay and Jarret Taylor each scored twice in the blowout win for the Owls, who improved to 16-0-1.

Overlake takes on Tri-District rival Vashon Island in a state-quarterfinal matchup at noon Saturday at Redmond High School. The Owls beat Vashon, 3-1, in a Tri-District playoff game last week.

Stevens earns spot at state track and field meet

Redmond High School’s Johnathan Stevens earned his first state track and field berth on Wednesday with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter race during the first day of the District 1/2 state-qualifying meet at Marysville-Philchuck High School.

Stevens finished the race in 4 minutes, 19.79 seconds. The junior is a three-time state cross country participant and will be making his first trip to the Class 4A state meet, which will be May 24-26 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

The top five from each event advance to state. Stevens was the only Redmond High athlete to qualify for state during Wednesday’s district meet, which concludes Friday.
