Prep report: Bear Creek boys’ soccer team on a roll

The Bear Creek boys’ soccer team reeled off its fourth straight Sea-Tac 2B League victory on Tuesday night in a big way, shutting out Evergreen Lutheran 5-0.

The scoring started early as Mark Phillips scored off a pass from Payum Abtahi in the first minute. Kyle Blankenbeckler later scored on a penalty kick in the 34th minute to put the Grizzlies up 2-0 at the half.

Phillips repeated his first-half feat by scoring again one minute into the second half. Nima Abtahi scored on a penalty kick to make it 4-0 and Dillon Camp capped the scoring off a Lucas Fernandez feed with two minutes left.

Jamie Clough earned the shutout, his second on the year.

The win improved Bear Creek to 5-1-1 in league play and 6-3-2 overall.

Owls fly high, rout Bush

The undefeated Overlake boys’ soccer team made another big statement as the frontrunner of the 1A Emerald City League with a 7-0 rout of Bush at Bush School on Tuesday afternoon.

Except for a Hakan Yagiz goal from Andrew Cunningham at the 2-minute mark, the Bush defense was able to keep the Owls at bay until just before halftime, and then the floodgates opened.

Jesse Klug and Gavin Mackinlay both scored twice, while Rohan Kumar and Conor Crowley both put one in during the scoring spree.

Chris Faulkner and Devon Schmidt had two assists and Grant Munoz also tallied an assist.

Goalkeepers Chap Grubb and John Stolarczuk combined for the shutout.

With the victory, Overlake remains atop the league at 7-0-0, 8-0-0 overall while Bush fell to 2-4-1 on the year.

Overlake girls dispatch Forest Ridge

The Overlake School goalkeepers Ceci Votta and Quinn Phillips put a lock on scoring as the Owls shut out the Forest Ridge Ravens, 5-0, in a 1A Emerald City League contest on Tuesday night at Robinswood Park.

Freshman Tess Edenholm scored twice in three minutes midway through the first half to lead the Owls. Senior Allison Risa scored two goals in the 8th and 58th minute. Adrianna Gildner scored an unassisted goal midway through the first half and also assisted one of Edenholm’s goals.

Maya Marder notched two assists of her own and Susannah Kelly had one.

The win improved Overlake to 6-1-0 in league play and 8-1-0 overall. The Owls are a half-game behind Seattle Academy (7-0-0, 7-1-0).

Mustang volleyball sweep LW

Playing at home, the Kangs were hungry for their first league win of the season, but the Mustangs denied them a taste of victory with a three game sweep 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.

Middle hitter Ashley Swanson jump-started the offense with 10 kills and three aces, Makayla Moller notched 21 assists and libero Justice Magraw hit the ground for 19 digs.

The win improved Redmond to 2-3 on the season and 3-3 overall while LW remained without a win at 0-6, 0-7 overall.

Overlake volleyball comes from behind

The Owls lost game one of their non-league matchup at Vashon Island on Monday night 25-22, but went on to rally and defeat the Pirates 3-1 with game victories of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-14.

Claire Bazely led the offense with nine kills to go along with three aces, while Jessica Elliot and Lauren Ambielli notched seven kills apiece. Alex Weaver used a great serve (seven aces) along with some solid setting (17 assists) to help the Owls to victory.

The win improved Overlake’s overall record to 6-3 on the year, with its league record holding steady at 4-2.

Redmond swimming defeats Interlake

The Mustangs eked out a close win over the Interlake Saints, 99-76, at Mary Wayte Pool on Tuesday.

Redmond won seven of the 12 events at the meet, including the 200 medley relay, during which the team of Allison Binkerd, Heather Harper, Keisha Chinn and Alexa Kroon finished first in 2 minutes, 5.76 seconds.

Harper won two individual events of her own, the 200 individual medley (2:16.69) and her specialty, the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.23.

Mustang tennis dominates Liberty, nipped by Skyline

On Tuesday afternoon at Liberty, the Mustangs used a retooled lineup to pound the Patriots 6-1. Jeff Jou, playing No. 1 singles, lost to Liberty No. 1 Thomas Lowes 6-4, 6-3, but the Mustangs won everything else, including a thrilling No. 1 doubles match featuring Blake Larsen and Scott Singleton against Patriots Chris Weik and Ryan Maio 7-6, 7-6. In the singles, Matt Lee beat Sho Kato 6-4, 6-1, Jorel Murray topped Hayden Meriwether 6-2, 6-2 and Ahmed Jafri came from behind against Michael Payant in the No. 4 singles slot 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The day before, the Mustangs were victorious in three of four singles matches but the Skyline Spartans swept the crucial doubles matches for a tight 4-3 win at Redmond High on Monday.

No. 1 Blake Larsen fell to Skyline’s Aman Manji 6-3. 6-4 but Jeff Jou came back against Ben Huang 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, Matt Lee handily defeated Brayden Hansen 6-2, 6-0 and Scott Singleton had no problems with Mitchell Johnson 6-1, 6-2.

Mustang golf runs record to 8-0 after Liberty rout

Playing at the friendly confines of Bear Creek Country Club on Wednesday, the Mustangs tuned up for the postseason by beating the Patriots 206-244 to lock up their first Kingco title since 2006.

Charlie Mroz bounced back from his worst round of the season, an eight-over 44 against Interlake last Thursday, to card a two-over 38 for medalist honors, with Ben Whitaker (40), Cole Helgeson (42) and Drew Fisher and Oliver Rudnicki (43) all contributing.

The Mustangs wrapped up their league season on Thursday night against rival Eastlake at Sahalee Country Club after the Reporter’s deadline and will be heading to Snohomish Golf Course next Tuesday and Wednesday for the District Championships and State Qualifier.
