Prep Report: Bulldogs run past Mustangs

Kieran Beaton led the Mustangs with 12 points, followed by Jason Harrington with eight.

The Mustangs are now 2-2 in league play and 3-3 overall.

The Mustangs will be heading south to Union High School in Camas, Wash. for a holiday tournament taking place Dec. 29-30.

Redmond girls fall to 0-5

What started out promising turned sour for the tough-luck Redmond girls’ basketball team. The Mustangs fell to 0-4 in league play and 0-5 overall after Garfield knocked off Redmond, 62-51, in a 4A Kingco game last Friday night.

Redmond raced out to a 22-10 first quarter lead and held a 10-point advantage at halftime, but the Bulldogs caught fire, putting 26 points on the board in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

Redmond’s Chandler Jones led all scorers with 24 points, while teammates Kailan Kalina and Marissa Pratt added eight apiece.

The Mustangs will be headed to a warmer climate over the winter break Dec. 28-30 to play in the Phoenix Cactus Jam tournament, featuring teams from all over the United States and Canada.

OWLS BEAT AUBURN ADVENTIST

The Overlake boys’ basketball team finished with a flourish in a 59-45 win against Auburn Adventist in the opening round of the Shot in the Dark Holiday tournament at The Overlake School on Monday night.

The Owls, led by John Stolarczuk’s game-high 22 points, scored 21 points in the fourth quarter after heading into the final quarter with a slim four-point lead. Cameron Lui scored 10 for the Owls, followed by Trent Halvorson with seven.

The boys’ team is now 4-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Owls played again late Tuesday night in the tournament championship game against 2B Bear Creek after the Reporter’s early holiday deadline.

By pure coincidence, the Overlake girls’ basketball team also beat Auburn Adventist by an identical 59-45 score, with the Owls taking the lead in the first quarter and holding on the whole game.

For Overlake (2-0 league, 3-1 overall), junior guard Meggie Howell put in a season-high 17, followed by seniors Jessica Elliott and Maya Marder adding 13, and 12, respectively.

The girls also played in the title game on Tuesday night against Bear Creek.

BEAR CREEK TEAMS POUND CHARLES WRIGHT

The Bear Creek boys’ basketball team outmatched Charles Wright Academy in the opening game of the Shot in the Dark tournament at the Overlake School on Monday as they routed the Tarriers 67-28.

The Grizzlies broke out to a 46-8 lead at halftime before slowing their offense.

The Grizzlies were led by junior guard Lucas Peterson and reigning Sea-Tac 2B MVP Jamie Meyer, who combined for 35 points, while Garrett Benson scored 13.

With the win, Bear Creek improved to 5-1 overall and remains 1-0 in league play.

Bear Creek played the Owls for the tournament title on Tuesday night after the Reporter’s early holiday deadline.

The red-hot Bear Creek girls’ team advanced to the championship game with a much closer 44-36 win, thanks to a strong finish by the Tarriers, who outscored the Grizzlies, 16-6, in the fourth quarter to make it a close game.

Bear Creek’s Tajel Mehta scored 14 to lead all scorers, followed by Megan Cheever with 11.

Bear Creek is 1-0 in Sea-Tac 2B league play and 7-1 overall.
