Prep Report: Grand slam lifts Redmond over Lake Washington

The Redmond High baseball team was down, but not out, to 3A Lake Washington on Friday night at Hartman Park. In the end, however, Mustangs, fueled by Zach Abbruzza's fifth-inning grand slam over the left-field fence, came back from a 7-3 deficit and scored seven unanswered runs to win 10-7.

The Kangaroos roughed up senior starter Peter Irvin, scoring runs in each of the first three innings, before Cody Beliel hit a double that scored two to close the gap at 4-3.

In the fifth, Peter Hendron laced a two-run double down the left-field line before Abbruzza blasted his fourth home run of the year.

Through seven games, Abbruzza is batting a phenomenal .714 (15-of-21) including 23 RBIs and nine extra-base hits.

With the win, the Mustangs improved to 5-2 overall and remained 2-0 in league play, with a matchup against Newport coming up tonight at home at 6 p.m.

Mustang soccer falls to Eastlake

The Redmond boys’ soccer team scored a pair of second-half goals, but it wasn’t enough against a hot Eastlake team as the Mustangs fell 4-2 in their Kingco league opener.

The Wolves scored first at the 16-minute mark and then added another with a controversial penalty kick call.

Early in the second half, Derek Horner booted in the Mustangs’ first goal of J.T. Newton’s set piece, with Redmond adding another by Julian White off of Preston Horner in the 60th minute.

With the loss, Redmond dropped to 4-2 overall.

Owls’ tennis slams Bear Creek, Bush

The boys’ tennis team had no trouble handling a shorthanded Bear Creek squad on Friday, sweeping 5-0 in a 1A Emerald City League matchup.

At No. 1 singles, Trym Torvund swept Gimin Moon 6-0, 6-0; twins Grant and Marcus Munoz beat Junwhan Yoo and Jude Ahn 6-0, 6-1; and the No. 2 doubles team of Bob Gardner and Grant Gibson swept Sung Jin Kim and Dong Min Jin 6-0, 6-0.

Also on Friday, the girls’ team dropped just one match in a 4-1 win over Bush. Caroline Roush, playing at No. 1, dropped Maya Shields 6-1, 6-1; in doubles action Emily Walter and Catherine Jessen beat Alaina Dussler and Anndee Hilton 6-1, 6-0; Tami Eydelman and Julia Wu won a third-set tiebreak to beat Vanessa Wong and Tia Monahan 6-4, 6-7, 1-0; and Clair Bond and Kelly Hanschen nearly swept Sage Mitchell-Sparke and Kelsey Overbey 6-0, 6-1.
