Prep Report: Grizzlies beat Mustangs in all-Redmond volleyball matchup

Bear Creek volleyball defeats Redmond Playing in a friendly all-Redmond preseason volleyball matchup, the 2B Bear Creek School Grizzlies took down the 4A Redmond High School Mustangs in three games, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday night at the Bear Creek School.

BEAR CREEK VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS REDMOND

Playing in a friendly all-Redmond preseason volleyball matchup, the 2B Bear Creek School Grizzlies took down the 4A Redmond High School Mustangs in three games, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 on Tuesday night at the Bear Creek School.

For the Grizzlies, Makena Schoene and Maddie Easley led the offense with six kills each, followed by Elizabeth Fernandez with five. Setter Michele Brown recorded three service aces and 22 assists.

For the Mustangs, Ashley Swanson had five kills and libero Justice Magraw recorded 11 point-saving digs.

OWLS VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO U. PREP IN TIEBREAK

The Overlake Owls lost a hard-fought battle on the volleyball court to University Prep on Wednesday night, 3-2 at The Overlake School. After getting dominated 25-11 in the first game, Overlake came back to win game two 25-20, dropped the third 25-21 and edged out the Pumas 25-22 in game four to set up a race-to-15 tiebreak. The Owls fell just short, 15-11.

For Overlake, Louise Chouinard led the offense with seven kills and four aces, followed by Susannah Halbrook with six kills.

Andreea Gavrilescu recorded 18 digs and setter Kirsten Parris had eight assists to go along with two blocks.

REDMOND WINS ANTICIPATED GOLF MATCH WITH WOODINVILLE

The Redmond High boys’ golf team waited two years to play rival Woodinville, and they made the most of it, beating the falcons 193 strokes to 202 on Tuesday afternoon on their home course, Bear Creek Country Club.

Leading the way for the Mustangs was Lyle Rudnicki, firing a 1-under 35 for the medal. Woodinville’s Kyle Lindor and Redmond team captain Charlie Mroz tied for second at 1-over 37, with Cole Helgeson placing fifth with a 39.

REDMOND TENNIS BEATS BOTHELL

The Redmond High tennis team, playing at home, took care of the Bothell Cougars 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Highlights were No. 2 and No. 3 singles players Matt Lee and Johnson Hsieh winning in straight sets – 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-0 respectively – and Paul DeWater coming back from a hard-fought tiebreaker loss in his first set to defeat Alon Patashik 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, each match went the distance, with Noah Klimisch and Aron Daw beating Kevin McShane and Mitchel Viydo 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 and the brother team of R.C. and Alex Dietz beating Jordan Huffaker and Tim Buttman 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3).

BEAR CREEK SOCCER REMAINS PERFECT

Bear Creek boys’ soccer remained unbeaten after a 3-1 win over Tacoma Baptist on Tuesday night, their opening game of the Sea-Tac 2B league season. Mark Phillips opened up the scoring in the 13th minute off a feed from Lucas Peterson, and Tom Postings scored twice, in the 30th minute off Jamie Clough, and in the 78th minute unassisted.

With the win, Bear Creek improved to 1-0-0 (3-0-0) this year.

BEAR CREEK GIRLS NOTCH WIN IN LEAGUE OPENER

The Lady Grizzlies got off to strong league start with a 3-1 victory over Crosspoint Academy on Tuesday night, at Crosspoint. After trading goals on free kicks, the second half was all Bear Creek as Kendall Wyman scored on an assist by Halle Coleman in the 59th minute, and Morgan Rial scored for the second time on a free kick in the 72nd minute to put the game away.

The win improved the Grizzlies’ overall record to 1-0-2.
