Prep Report: Holiday hoops tournament results

The Bear Creek School Grizzlies were outlasted by 3A Glacier Peak last night in the consolation finals of the Bellevue College Holiday Classic, 54-44. Behind the 14 points of 6-foot-11 post Peyton Pervier of Glacier Peak, the Grizzlies, who trailed by just one at the half, fell behind 41-32 after three quarters and failed to mount a charge.

Lucas Peterson led the Grizzlies with 15 points.

The loss dropped Bear Creek to 6-3 overall on the year.

MUSTANG GIRLS FALL TO SHORECREST

Playing their third game in as many days, the Lady Mustangs got off to a sluggish start in a 41-34 loss to Shorecrest in the final game of the Kingco/Wesco Challenge at Juanita High on Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs managed just 12 points in the first half, before a big fourth quarter by Shorecrest kept the game out of reach.

For Redmond, Lauren Bogard led the squad with 12, followed by Stacey Kimball with 11.

The Mustangs are now 2-7 overall on the season and resume 4A Kingco play next Friday against Newport.

GRIZZLIES HALTED BY NO. 9 SAMMAMISH

Playing in the Bellevue College tournament semifinals, the Bear Creek boys’ team was outplayed by No. 9-ranked Sammamish in 3A, 65-43, on Wednesday night at Bellevue College.

The Totems outscored the Grizzlies 23-9 in the decisive second quarter, as the Grizzlies went into the locker room facing a 36-25 deficit that they were unable to overcome.

Sammamish standout John Steinberg led all scorers with 25. For Bear Creek, Ryan Strandin poured in 18 and Lucas Fernandez added eight.

With the loss, the Grizzlies dropped to 6-2 overall and will play Glacier Peak tonight in the consolation finals.

OWLS OUTLASTED BY WESTON-McEWEN in OT

Two games away from a tournament title at the D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic in Walla Walla, the Overlake boys’ team fell in a back-and-forth thriller against Weston-McEwen from Athena, Ore., 70-61 in overtime.

Despite being held to just six points in the first quarter, the Owls fought back and matched Weston-McEwen shot for shot down the stretch, but got outscored 18-8 in the overtime period.

For Overlake, Dean Poplawski scored a game-high 22, followed by the 19 points of Cameron Lui.

The Owls dropped to 2-7 overall with the loss and will take on Valley Christian in the consolation finals tonight.

GLACIER PEAK FINISHES STRONG AGAINST MUSTANGS

Playing in the consolation semifinals of the Kingco/Wesco Challenge last night at Juanita, the Mustang girls got stopped by Glacier Peak in the second half of a 50-42 loss.

Redmond led 26-24 at the half, but was held to just eight points in each of the two remaining quarters as the Grizzlies took the lead for good.

For Redmond, Lauren Bogard led all scorers with 13, followed by Makaela Hayward with nine.

Redmond (2-6) will play Shorecrest this afternoon in the final game of the tournament.

The Redmond boys placed third at the first-annual Slalom Slam with a 62-53 win over McQueen from Reno, Nev. last night at Seattle Prep.

The win lifted the Mustangs to 6-4 overall this season, with the boys resuming their league schedule against Roosevelt on Tuesday night, at Roosevelt, at 7:30 p.m.
