Playing in their 4A Kingco Crest Division opener Tuesday against the rival Eastlake Wolves, at Eastlake High, the Redmond High baseball team poured on the offense in a 12-1 blowout win.
Senior Zach Abbruzza led the way, smashing two triples while driving in a career-high seven RBIs as part of a 4-4 night. Conner Bozman and Jake Levin each added three hits and three runs scored, with starter Dylan Davis going four strong innings, yielding two hits and one run for the win.
The win improved Redmond to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Mustangs crush Bothell, win at Whidbey
The Redmond High girls’ golf team won their 78th straight Kingco match on Wednesday, defeating Bothell 229-294 at Wayne Golf Course.
Junior Keira O’Hearn was medalist with a 43, followed by Stephanie Schoeppel (44), Kelly Kennewick (46) Alicia Hooper (47) and Casie Helgeson (48).
Last Monday, the Mustangs dominated the field at the tough Whidbey Island Country Club. at the annual Whidbey Invitational. Only 13 players in the field of 72 were able to break 100, and all six of Redmond’s players scored in the double-digits.
Leading the way for Redmond was O’Hearn with an 85, good for second place overall, followed by Makayla Walker (88), Peyton Halstead (91), Alicia Bies (93), Helgeson (94) and Carley Kalina (97).
Bear Creek golfers rout Rainier Christian
The Bear Creek School boys’ golf team put together a few fine rounds in a 169-301 rout of Rainier Christian at Elk Run Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon.
Leading the way for the Grizzlies was Will Stansell, firing a 2-over-par 38 for medalist honors, followed by Gannon McCahill (40) and Ricky Olson (42). In the match, Stansell, McCahill, Olson and Will’s younger brother Sam Stansell each qualified for the Tri-District tournament.
Mustang tennis beats Bothell
The Redmond High girls’ tennis team lost just one singles match and one doubles match in a 5-2 team win over Bothell on Wednesday afternoon at home.
Highlights for Redmond included No. 1 Sarah Du beating Rebekah You 6-1, 6-2; No. 2 Raluca Ifrim winning easily over Ana Samora 6-1, 6-1; No. 3 Sophia Xu edging Linda Vinitnanthaarat 7-5, 6-4; No. 1 doubles Darien French-Owen and Jeneal Carter winning their match 6-4, 6-0 and No. 3 Meg Holtzinger and Anna Aslin winning a third-set tiebreaker 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Owls’ tennis routs Bush
The Overlake School girls’ tennis team beat Bush 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle.
Winning for the Owls: No. 1 singles Caroline Roush, nearly sweeping Maya Shields 6-1, 6-0; No. 1 doubles Catherine Jessen and Emily Walter winning 6-1, 6-0; No. 2 Julia Wu and Tammy Eydelman winning a tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7, 1-0; and No, 3 Clair Bond and Kelly Hanschen dominating 6-0, 6-1.
Owl golfers go low against Bellevue Christian
The Overlake School’s Reid Fredrickson fired a 3-under-par 31 at Twin Rivers Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon, leading the Owls to a 149-170 victory in a 1A Emerald City league matchup against Bellevue Christian.
Daniel Lee (37) and Noah Mayer (39) also contributed solid scores in the Owls’ winning effort.
The Overlake girls dominated Cedar Park Christian in a modified Stableford match, 65-38, at the Golf Club at Redmond Ridge Monday afternoon.
Jenay Brown led all players with 24 points, followed by Meggie Howell with 17 and Nicki Buecker with 15.
Mustang soccer suffers first loss against Newport
The Redmond boys’ soccer team, which started the season 4-0, had plenty of shots but could not find the net during a 1-0 loss to Newport in their final preseason game at home Tuesday night.
The difference was a goal 10 minutes into the second half by Kevin Figari off of Daehyun Kim, with Knights’ goalkeeper Nick Shankland earning the shutout.
The Mustangs open up their 4A Kingco league schedule on Friday at Eastlake at 7:30 p.m.
