The Redmond Mustangs lost to Newport in a tight 3-2 ball game to end their regular season on Tuesday night in a 4A Kingco makeup game at Newport High — a game that had big playoff implications.

Knights’ ace Cole Wiper and Redmond’s Zach Abbruzza squared off in a duel, with a two-run home run by Newport’s Jared Fisher in the fourth inning proving to be the difference.

Wiper and junior Aaron Sandefur combined to strike out 14 Redmond batters.

For the Mustangs, Zach Abbruzza notched two of the Mustangs’ four hits, with seniors Dylan Davis and Michael Conforto also checking in with a base knock.

With the Knights defeating Eastlake to finish tied with Redmond at 11-3 on the league season, Newport will get the No. 1 seed to the 4A Kingco Tournament by virtue of having a better Crest Division record than the Mustangs.

The Mustangs open up the tournament on Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Crown Division’s No. 3 seed, Inglemoor (9-6). If they win, they will secure a state berth by defeating the winner of Bothell (13-2) vs. Issaquah (6-8) in the semifinals on Monday, May 9 at 4 p.m.
