Prep Report: Owls win, earn state berth

Lynden Christian got on the board early with a second-minute goal, but Overlake answered with a penalty-kick goal by senior Emily Kelly. Then, in the 31st minute, sophomore Adrianna Gildner scored just inside the far post on freshman Katie Hill’s assist as the Owls took to the lead.

In the second half, speedy freshman Jenay Brown played a feed from senior Nikki Reynolds around the Lyncs’ goalie for an insurance goal.

With the win, the Owls advanced to a seeding game against University Prep at King’s School on Saturday. The state tournament will get underway next Tuesday and Wednesday, with the semifinals and championship matches taking place Nov. 19-20 at Carl Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

LADY GRIZZLIES ADVANCE TO TRI-DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The Bear Creek School girls’ soccer team survived a scoreless battle with Evergreen Lutheran on Thursday night at Sammamish High School, finally scoring a goal in the first overtime period en route to a 1-0 shutout victory in a Bi-District semifinal playoff game.

The game-winner came off the foot of Morgan Rial from Caroline Bridgwater’s assist in the 81st minute of play, and goalkeeper Kristina Engelstone earned the shutout.

With the win, the Grizzlies will advance to the finals against LaConner on Saturday at 7 p.m., with the winner earning the No. 1 seed to the state tournament and the loser, No. 2.

OVERLAKE VOLLEYBALL OUSTED AFTER HEARTBREAKING LOSS

The Overlake School volleyball team gave it everything they had, but fell in the first round of the Tri-District volleyball tournament in a tiebreaker, 3-2, to Charles Wright.

Overlake won games one and three, 25-23 and 25-20, but dropped games two and four 12-25 and 20-25 to set up a race-to-15 tiebreak to decide the match.

Charles Wright had momentum and was able to finish off the Owls 15-12, ending Overlake’s season.

For the Owls, Kirsten Parris slammed a season-high 20 kills, followed by freshman Lauren Bazley with 16, also a season high.

Louise Chouinard saved 25 balls via the dig, and setter Vanessa Rosato recorded 43 assists.

The Owls finished with a record of 8-11 overall on the year.
