On the strength of a grand slam by junior Lindsay Cristobal, the Redmond High fastpitch team opened up their season in a big way with a 13-3 win over the Snohomish Panthers in a nonleague game at Snohomish High School on Monday.

Cristobal’s big hit came in the second inning, a line drive over the left-field fence leading to a seven-RBI day. Snohomish fought back with two runs in the bottom half of the second, before Redmond exploded for four more in the fifth to put the game away.

Starting pitcher Emily Graves notched three strikeouts and scattered eight hits, while the Mustangs combined for 15 hits.

In addition to Cristobal’s home run, she also hit a double, Louise Chouinard went 2-for-3 with two doubles, Ashley Mitchell went 3-for-3, and Chelsea Rakonza and Emily Graves added two hits each.

The Mustangs next play at home against Edmonds/Woodway on Thursday night at 4:30 p.m. after the Reporter’s deadline.

Mustang baseball blows out Curtis

The Redmond High baseball team hammered three grand slams, including two in the first inning, on the way to a 24-2 nonleague win over Curtis of Tacoma in Monday’s season opener at Hartman Park

The first six Mustangs got on base as Redmond exploded for 18 runs in the first inning. Junior Dylan Davis and Michael Conforto both blasted grand slams in the first-inning flurry.

Sophomore Peter Hendron added a slam of his own in the fourth inning, and Patrick McGrath followed shortly after with a solo shot.

On the hill, junior Zach Abbruzza pitched three scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out four in the win.

On a wet and cold Tuesday night, the Mustangs matched up against the Monroe Bearcats and fought to a 0-0 tie through seven innings, before Michael Conforto came up with a clutch, walk-off RBI base hit in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Mustangs a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Davis was masterful on the mound, pitching four innings of no-hit ball before Peter Hendron and Matt Kimmel followed suit, only giving up one hit apiece.

The wins improved Redmond to 2-0 in nonleague play to start the season.
