The Redmond High wrestling team put together a strong performance at last weekend’s 4A Kingco Championships at Juanita High School, with three Mustangs advancing to championship bouts.

Senior Joe Glass, wrestling at 189 pounds, was Redmond’s only Kingco crown winner, beating Ingelmoor sophomore Josh Koukal, 8-2.

At 135 pounds, Inglemoor standout Anthony Bratcher (25-1 on the season) beat Redmond’s Brandon Long on a 12-0 decision and Simeon Simov (171) fell victim to a second-round pin by Inglemoor’s Ben Grabowski.

In the girls’ sub-regional championships, also at Juanita, Redmond senior Catherine Kelly ran through the field and beat Summer Hanson of Interlake on a major decision 14-2 to advance to the state tournament, which will take place Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome.

Long, Glass and Simov will advance to the regional tournament this Saturday, Feb. 12 at Skyline High School in Sammamish, with action getting underway at 9:15 a.m. The top five from each weight class at regionals will advance to state.

MUSTANG GYMNASTS ADVANCE TO REGIONALS

The Redmond High gymnastics team performed well at last weekend’s 4A Kingco Tournament at Ballard High School, sending five individuals on to this weekend’s District 1 and 2 Championships at Sammamish High in Bellevue.

Team captain Ally Garcia advanced as an all-around competitor with a total of 32.05 points, highlighted by a stellar 9.4 performance on the floor. Marjorie Drieu advanced on the vault with a score of 8.15. Chelsea Polk achieved a new personal best on the floor — a score of 8.775 — to punch her district ticket. Kaylee Borms made it on the bars (7.30) and the beam (8.00), and Cristal Spinrad advanced in three events: the floor (9.025), bars (7.80) and vault (8.050).

At the district championships, athletes need to place in the top five in an individual event in order to earn a berth to the state meet, which will be Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

KLASSEN SECOND IN KINGCO DIVING FINALS

Redmond sophomore Phillip Klassen uncorked a silver-medal performance at the 4A Kingco Diving Championships last weekend at Newport Hills Swim & Dive Club with 359.15 points, trailing only Skyline standout Max Levy, who won the meet with 399.70 points.

Mustang highlights from the swim portion of the meet, contested at the University of Washington’s Pavilion Pool, included Albert Jiang, a freshman, placing 10th in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 1.78 seconds, and sophomore Michael Pavlov finishing 12th overall in the 100-yard freestyle.

The Mustangs as a team placed 14th out of 18 teams with 168 points.

So far, Klassen and his younger brother Eric, a freshman, will represent the Mustangs at the state swim and dive meet on Feb. 19, with a slew of District qualifiers looking to nail down state times this weekend at UW’s Pavilion Pool, with final heats beginning at 3:30 p.m.

MUSTANGS CLIPPED BY EAGLES, TO FACE NO. 1 GARFIELD TUESDAY

The Redmond boys’ basketball squad fell to the Issaquah Eagles on Friday night in its regular-season finale at home, 60-55.

Redmond led 42-41 after three quarters before a 19-point barrage by the Eagles allowed them to pull ahead late in the quarter.

Eagles’ junior guard Nick Price paced Issaquah with 15, and Redmond’s Conner Floan led all scorers with 21, followed by Andrew Squiers with 14.

The loss, the Mustangs’ sixth straight, dropped them to 7-7 (10-10 overall) and fourth place in the Crest Division.

Mustangs’ leading scorer Jason Harrington sat for the second straight game following a hip injury he sustained during the Mustangs’ Jan. 18 win against Garfield, and will be in the lineup on Tuesday night, according to head coach Jeff Larson.

They will play No. 1-ranked Garfield again, at Garfield High, at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night in the 4A Kingco Tournament opener.

GRIZZLIES ROUT EVERGREEN LUTHERAN

The Bear Creek boys’ team held its opponent to less than 30 points for the fourth consecutive game on Friday night at home as the Grizzlies beat the Eagles 65-25 in a Sea-Tac 2B league game.

Ryan Strandin poured in a game-high 23, with Luke Blankenbeckler posting 11.

The Grizzlies are now 11-0 in league play and 16-3 overall.

The Lady Grizzlies used a big second half to propel themselves to victory over the Eagles, 45-37.

Down 20-19 at halftime, the Grizzlies came out firing and took the lead in the third quarter, and didn’t give it back down the stretch.

Maddie Magee and Catherine Fernandez led Bear Creek with 10 points each, followed by Morgan Rial with eight.

The Lady Grizzlies stayed perfect this season with 9-0 in league and 16-0 overall.

OWLS FALL TO UPREP

Playing at home on Friday night against University Prep, the Owls couldn’t keep up with the Pumas’ offense in a 61-43 loss.

The Owls, down by 10 at the half, narrowed the gap to just six after three quarters, 41-35, but a 20-point fourth period by the Pumas put the game quickly out of reach.

For Overlake, Dean Poplawski led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Jackson Umberger with 10.

The Owls dropped to 3-10 in 1A Emerald City League action and 6-14 overall.
