PREP REPORT: Tough-luck Mustangs fall to 0-5

The Redmond football team put forth one of its best efforts of the season, but it still wasn’t enough as Newport beat the Mustangs, 21-14, in a 4A Kingco Crest Division contest at Redmond High Friday night.

The Redmond football team put forth one of its best efforts of the season, but it still wasn’t enough as Newport beat the Mustangs, 21-14, in a 4A Kingco Crest Division contest at Redmond High Friday night.

The score was knotted 14-14 at the half on the strength of Sean Shewey’s two rushing touchdowns of 10 and 2 yards. The senior running back, who was named the Mustang Player of the Game during Redmond’s Best of the West matchup against Bothell at Qwest Field on Sept. 20, finished with 76 yards rushing. He also had six tackles on defense.

“We wanted to establish the running game and have a chance to try to move the football and keep a high percentage of completions,” Redmond coach Mike Pluschke said of his team’s game plan. “We feel like we did that in the first half, we had a lot of long drives and kept our defense off the field.”

Senior quarterback David Gilbertson had an outstanding game, going 9 for 10 in the first half and finished 16 of 33 for 215 yards. The Mustang defense struggled to stop the Knights’ running game as Newport racked up 324 yards on the ground.

The backbreaker came when Newport’s Jonte Giacomino broke free for a 63-yard touchdown run that proved to be the difference in the game.

Pluschke was pleased to see his offense put together key drives that put his team in position to score.

“Offensively, we had four long drives that ended on us running out of plays — fourth-and-3, fourth-and-4 and we weren’t able to convert, but they were good, time-clock moving drives in good field position,” Pluschke said. “We were just not able to finish with touchdowns and points when we needed them.”

Going into Friday’s game on the road against Kingco powerhouse Issaquah (2-0 league, 5-0 overall), the Mustangs (0-2, 0-5) are still searching for their first win.

The Redmond football team put forth one of its best efforts of the season, but it still wasn’t enough as Newport beat the Mustangs, 21-14, in a 4A Kingco Crest Division contest at Redmond High Friday night.

“They’re a great opponent,” Pluschke said of the Eagles, who handled Eastlake, 28-3, last Friday. “Our kids are excited, ready to play and put our best effort on the field. We look forward to putting up our first ‘W’ against a great football team.”
