Redmond edges Mount Si in golf showdown

In a battle of 4A Kingco perrenial powers, the Redmond golf team took advantage of playing on its home course on Tuesday at Bear Creek Country Club, narrowly defeating the Wildcats 192-197.

Mount Si, which went undefeated last year en route to a 4A Kingco championship, were led by senior captain Brad Harrelson, who shot a one-over-par 37, and Junior World competitor Jack Kelly, who medaled with an even-par 36.

Leading the way for the Mustangs were Charlie Mroz and Oliver Rudnicki at 37, followed by senior Ben Whitaker who sunk a 28-foot birdie to card a two-over 38.

Mroz also hit his first career hole-in-one last Thursday, Sept. 17 during a league match at Jefferson Park Golf Course in a blowout win against Garfield.

Earning medalist honors with a season-best three-under-par 33, Mroz hit his magical shot on the 156-yard, par-3 third hole, a 7-iron that landed inches from the cup and spun in.

The Mustangs played Newport on Thursday afternoon at Bear Creek after the Reporter’s deadline.

Bothell quarterback Mitchell Muller threw four touchdowns during Bothell’s 54-0 rout of Redmond (0-3) in a 4A Kingco contest last Friday in front of a packed house at Pop Keeney Stadium.

The hometown crowd had plenty to cheer about as Gene Watson, Michael Hartvigson, Bobby Gagnon and John Sullivan all reeled in touchdown passes as the Cougars built up a 23-0 lead at halftime and extended it to 47-0 by the end of the third quarter.

The Mustangs (0-3) face the unbeaten Eastlake Wolves (3-0), led by the golden arm of 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior quarterback Kelby McCorkle, this Friday at home, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. McCorkle completed 53 of 83 pass attempts, including 17 touchdowns, last season after taking over the lead role halfway through the 2008 season.

Bear Creek Volleyball blasts Seattle Lutheran

The Grizzlies defeated the Saints 3-0 during a Sea-Tac 2B League volleyball matchup Tuesday night at home.

Bear Creek eked victories 25-23 and 27-25 against the Saints in the first two games before ending the match with a decisive 25-7 win in the third game.

Hitters Maddie Easley and Dominique DuBois led the offense with nine and seven kills, respectively, while setter Erica Leuenberger earned 16 assists. Sophomore libero Nikki Peterson had an 23 digs in the team win.

The win evened up the Grizzlies’ league record at 1-1, 3-1 overall.

Overlake soccer teams remain unbeaten

The Overlake girls’ soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit and slammed Bush 3-1 during an Emerald City League contest Tuesday at Overlake.

The Owls trailed 1-0 at halftime, but score three unanswered goals in the second half to seal the win.

Susannah Kelly, assisted by Tess Edenholm, scored to open up the second half and then Maya Marder headed in the game-winner from Kelly in the corner.

Kelly put in one more of her own off two great feeds from Allison Risa and Maya Marder during the 75th minute as an insurance goal.

The win kept the Owls on top of the 1A Emerald City League at 4-0-0 (6-0-0 overall).

On the boys side, the Owls shut out Bellevue Christian, 7-0, on Monday night. All of the Owls’ goals were scored in the first half, led by Joe Dolack, who had two goals, and Dean Poplawski, who earned two assists. Henk Wolda, Conor Crowley, Gavin Mackinlay, Jesse Klug, and Devon Schmidt also had goals for the Owls during the scoring spree, while Chap Grubb and Schmidt combined for the shutout.

The win improved Overlake to 3-0-0 and 4-0-0 overall.

Grizzlies rout Mt. Rainier Lutheran

The Bear Creek boys’ soccer team scored early and often during a blowout 8-0 win against Mount Rainier Lutheran at home on Tuesday.

The scoring got started with a Will Stansell feed to Mark Phillips in the eighth minute, and the Grizzlies never looked back.

Kyle Blankenbeckler scored on a penalty kick at 11-minute mark, and then Nima Abtahi, Jordan Domingo, Brandon Matson and Payum Abtahi found the back of the net before halftime as the Grizzlies took a commanding 6-0 lead.

In the second half, Josh Firminger joined the scoring party and Abtahi knocked in his second goal of the game.

Goalkeepers Jamie Clough and Jordan Domingo combined for the shutout.

The win improved Bear Creek to 2-1-1 in Sea-Tac 2B league play and 3-3-1 overall.

Bear Creek girls notch first win

The Grizzlies’ soccer squad got into the win column in a big way as the Grizzlies beat Seattle Lutheran, 3-0, in a Sea-Tac 2B contest Tuesday night.

The game remained scoreless at halftime but in the 49th minute Morgan Rial put the Grizzlies on the board with a Tajel Mehta assist, and Ariel LaBaw scored twice at 57:00 and 79:00 on feeds from Catherine Pomeroy and Rial, respectively.

The win, which came in Bear Creek’s first league match of the season, improved the Grizzlies to 1-4 overall.

Skyline swimming dominates Redmond

Led by Spartan swimming sensation Andie Taylor, Skyline won all but one event during a 144-41 victory over the Mustangs on Tuesday night at Redmond Pool.

Junior Heather Harper, who won the 100 fly event in 1:02.51, qualified for state in her bread-and-butter event — the 100 breaststroke — two weeks ago during a meet against Newport.
