Lake Washington High School (LWHS) family, friends and community members are invited to celebrate the history of Chapple Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 5.

The facility was named after Doug Chapple, a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator for over 48 years, including teaching business education at LWHS from 1963 to 1991.

As the head wrestling coach, Chapple led 43 athletes to state during his tenure and also coached football, track, and cross country. He was inducted into the Washington State Coaches’ Hall of Fame in 1994.

Chapple will be honored in between the girls’ and boys’ varsity games against Bothell that evening, with the boys’ game scheduled to start at 8 p.m., and alumni will have an opportunity to visit with him throughout the evening.

A new gym will be built this summer, to open next fall. The rest of the new Lake Washington High School is currently under construction behind the old high school building, which will be used through the next school year (2010-2011). The new Lake Washington High School will be opened in the fall of 2011. This project was funded by district voters who passed a modernization bond for the district in 2006.
