SPORTS BRIEFS: Mustang runners shine at Nike Borderclash

Redmond High School seniors Mack Young and Devin McMahon uncorked strong performances at the 11th annual Nike BorderClash race, held last Sunday at the Nike World Headquarters campus in Beaverton, Ore.

The cross country meet, which pits the top high school runners from Washington with Oregon’s best, was dominated by Washington runners as they swept the top 10 spots in the boys’ race and 15 of the top 16 in the girls’ race.

Young placed fifth for the boys with a time of 14 minutes, 26 seconds on the 4,400-meter, rain-drenched course. McMahon also placed fifth for the girls in 16:52.

MAMON HIRED AS NEW FASTPITCH COACH

Redmond High School has hired Parris Mamon as the new girls’ fastpitch head coach, replacing Pat Frable, according to a Redmond High press release. Frable, who guided the Mustangs to their second-consecutive state tournament appearance last spring, resigned at the end of last season to spend more time with his family.

Mamon, who resides in Renton with his wife Teri and four daughters, coached at Lindbergh High School in Renton for the previous six years.

REDMOND ALUM MITZ PLAYED IN APPLE CUP

Washington State University running back Logwone Mitz, a 2007 Redmond High graduate, got some playing in last Saturday’s Apple Cup at Husky Stadium as the Huskies blew out the Cougars 30-0.

Mitz, a red-shirt sophomore, finished the game with 11 total yards, including an 8-yard reception.

Mitz, whose father, Alonzo, played for the Seattle Seahawks, is pursuing a degree in biological sciences.
