Obama’s birth certificate is old news | Letter

(This letter is responding to Richard W. Bowne’s letter, “Dear ‘Marching into Action,” which was published last issue.)

Reasonable people can disagree.

That being said, I can’t believe you are still bringing up President Obama’s birth certificate. Even the man you are trying to defend has stated that there is no issue around that. Selective Service registration? You are treading on thin ice with that one given that President Trump received a 4F deferment for bone spurs in his heel, but still managed to play varsity baseball in college. College records? What bearing might they possibly play in discussing a president’s fitness or ability to govern?

However, getting back to the real focus of your letter, non-disclosure of tax returns does raise the question of fitness and ability to govern. Mr. Trump is pushing massive tax reform. Are we not entitled to see how his plan might affect his personal financial situation? Should the American public not be able to see what financial ties Mr. Trump may have to foreign banks or governments? The failure to make his tax returns public goes hand-in-hand with his decision to not put his business holdings into a blind trust. Allowing his sons to run his businesses, while he still retains a stake in those businesses, raises a host of ethical questions.
