Ironheart Classic slated for May 21 at Marymoor Park

The Ironheart Classic 4 mile/8 Mile Race and Health/Fitness Festival will be at Marymoor Park‘s Velodrome race track on May 21 at 9 a.m.

This event will raise money for the Nick of Time Foundation, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to educating schools, athletes and communities about sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and death in young people. SCA is the sudden onset of an abnormal and lethal heart rhythm. Nick of Time provides Washington schools free cardiac screenings, which in addition to the proper placement of automatic external defibrillators (AED), is the only way to save lives, according to Nick of Time.

SCA is the leading cause of death in the United States, affecting more than 300,000 individuals per year (more than breast cancer, prostate cancer and AIDS combined). The condition is also the leading cause of sudden death in exercising young athletes. According to the American Heart Association, one in 350 children may have a heart condition that can lead to sudden death and most are undiagnosed until experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest.

The event will also include Hands only CPR training, bicycle helmet and car seat safety checks, music, food, shirts, giveaways and prizes — including a raffle to win an AED.

Blitz from the Seattle Seahawks will be in attendance, along with the Blue Thunder drummers. Jamba Juice will provide free smoothies and Banana Man will begin the race. The Ironheart Classic is a pet and family friendly event.

Nick of Time is also planning an October screening at Redmond High School, at 17272 N.E. 104th, this fall. For more information on the Nick of Time, visit www.nickoftimefoundation.org.
