After placing first in Washington for Destination Imagination’s technical challenge at the elementary level, Louisa May Alcott Elementary School’s Awesome Assemblers team placed 14th at the recent Destination Imagination Global Finals competition in Knoxville, Tenn.
The team is made up of fifth-graders Ayan Gupta, Sid Vijay and Vedantha Venkatapathy and fourth-graders Samarjit Kaushik, Patrick Pierson and Luke Jianu.
The group’s 14th-place finish put them in the top 20 percent in a competition encompassing 33 countries, 49 states and more than 75 teams at the elementary school level.
As part of their challenge, the fourth- and fifth-graders completed two tasks. First, they must built cars programed to travel a pre-determined distance without human interference or the help of a remote control. They also had to write and perform a skit to go with the car challenge. The car demonstration and skit were performed simultaneously before judges. In addition, the teams was given on-the-spot challenges to perform in just a few minutes.
