STEM School students win Imagine Tomorrow awards

More than two dozen students from Redmond’s STEM School were recently honored with awards at the sixth annual Imagine Tomorrow competition at Washington State University.

Imagine Tomorrow asks students in grades 9-12 to team up and develop solutions to the world’s energy problems. The competition attracted more than 500 students from three states to compete for more than $100,000 in cash prizes. Each team answers one of four challenges: Behavior, Biofuels, Design or Technology.

STEM School students won awards in each of the challenge categories:

• One team took first place in the Design Challenge, winning $1,000 for each student team member and $5,000 for their school. Team members:Christopher Yu, Aaron Johnston, Robert Wicks, Kanaad Deodhar and Richard Wen.

• Two other teams scored third-place wins in the Technology and Biofuels challenges. They won $500 per student and $1,500 for the school.

Technology team members: JD Daly, Madison Minsk, Abhishek Sangameswaran, Mrigank Bhardwaj and Pranav Vasudha.

Biofuels team members:Kaimyn O’Neill, Meena Meyyappan, Daaniya Iyaz, Ling Huang and Warisha Soomro.

• Another group of students landed the fourth-place award in the Behavior Challenge, winning $250 per student and $1,000 for the school. Team members:Maya Ganesan, Pavitra Siva, Alka Pai, Saakshi Dulani and Dipti Dhond.

• In addition, a STEM School team was recognized with the Community Impact Award, which acknowledges an idea that could give communities the power to transform themselves. Team members:Lynsey Liu, Hana Keller, Catherine Yao, Christina Dias and Jennifer Yeh.
